Watch Out For Scams
How can I protect myself from scams?
Scammers use a variety of tricks to gain people's trust and steal their information including phishing emails, social media contacts and calls. Here are some tips to protect yourself from scams:
Be careful with emails - Don't open or reply to unsolicited emails or spam, and be wary of attachments from people you don't know. Scammers may impersonate someone or an organization, or send emails that look like password update requests or automated messages. These emails may create a sense of urgency or fear, or claim there's a problem with your account that requires your personal information to fix.
Don't click links - Avoid clicking links in emails or pop-ups, even from trusted sources, unless you've verified they're authentic. If you receive a pop-up message that asks you to call a number for help, you can take a screenshot of the screen, including the URL, and include it in any reports that you make to law enforcement.
Be carful what you share - Scammers use information you share online, like your birthday, family members, or pet names, to guess your password or answer security questions.
Use strong passwords - Use different, strong passwords for all your accounts, and change them every few months. Passwords should include letters, numbers and special characters.
Enable two-factor authentication - Set up two-factor authentication on any account that supports it, and don't disable it.
